The region of Murcia lies to the south of Valencia and is pinched between the more-trodden beaches of Almeria to the south and the heaving resorts of Valencia’s Costa Blanca to the north. Murcia is one of Spain’s hidden gems, Embedded in between parts of the mountains of the Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta de Gallo, Murcia was born thanks to the large and sophisticated watering system. Its coast, with over 200 beaches, shares two different bodies of water: the Mediterranean and the Menor Sea, La Manga, which is an outstretched piece of land has become one of the most important resort areas of what is called the ‘Costa Calida’ or the Warm Coast together with Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca.
From a tourist point of view Murcia offers a huge amount of interesting places to visit as the history of the city goes back to the years 800 where it was originally founded as part of Cordoba. Certainly amongst the famous visiting points for any traveller is the Cathedral de Santa Maria, finished in the 15th century the cathedral is the most impressive monument of Murcia. With over 3000 hours of sunshine each year, it almost guarantees an all-over tan and during the summer months the temperatures can soar and along with the mild winters Mercia makes an excellent all year round destination, whether you choose to spread your towel in the tourist pulls of the Mar Menor or visit the quieter, much more Spanish resorts southwards there is something for everyone.
