Cumbria and Lake District

The Lake District, also known as The Lakes or Lakeland is a very popular holiday destination. The county consists of six districts and is predominantly a rural county. Cumbria is home to the Lake District National Park and is considered to be one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom. Being one of the most beautiful corners of England’s green and pleasant land means the Lake District is hardly off the beaten track and it has provided inspiration for generations of British and foreign artists, writers, musicians and it is famous for its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets.

Overview

England's largest National Park includes the highest point of the county being Scafell Pike, its highest mountain, as well as including Wastwater - its deepest lake alongside thriving communities like Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere. Windermere has served as the main gateway to the Lake District since the arrival of the steam railway in 1847 and remains one of the region’s busiest spots.
