St Austell

As in much of Cornwall and neighbouring counties, tourism is increasingly important to St Austell''s economy. Tourists are drawn to the area by nearby beaches and attractions such as the Eden Project, sited in a former clay pit, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan and summer visitors to the town make a big contribution to the local economy. The China Clay Country Park, in a former china-clay pit two miles north of the town, tells the story of the men, women and children who lived, worked and played in the shadow of the clay tips around St Austell.

Overview

St Austell is arguably one of the six largest centres of population in Devon and Cornwall. The bustling market town often referred to as the capital of the Cornish Alps, the ethereal white mini-mountains and the spoil heaps of the china-clay industry all lend an eerie atmosphere to its landscape. William Cookworthy discovered the clay in 1755, and with the opening of the pits to mine the clay St. Austell’s population and prosperity soon began to grow. Kao-Lin, an essential ingredient in the manufacture of porcelain, had previously only been found in northern China. Today Cornwall still exports clay, which is also used to produce paint, paper and some medicines.
